Arrhythmia

An arrhythmia is the term given to an irregular heart beat. The rate of the heart beat can be slower or faster than normal, and may even be in an irregular pattern.

Arrhythmias may be caused by
Heart disease
Electrolyte imbalances in your blood (such as sodium or potassium).
Changes in heart muscle structure.
Injury from a heart attack.
Healing process after heart surgery.

An arrhythmia can be silent and not cause any symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include:
An irregular heartbeat that can be felt
Pounding in your chest.
Dizziness or feeling lightheaded.
Fainting.
Shortness of breath.
Chest discomfort.
Weakness or fatigue (feeling very tired)

Treatment for an arrhythmia depends on the type and seriousness of your arrhythmia. Some people with arrhythmias require no treatment. For others, treatments can include medication, making lifestyle changes and undergoing surgical procedures.
