Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxlike substance that is made in the liver. It is beneficial to us in that it helps the body to make hormones and vitamin D. However, excess cholesterol can lead to a build up in the blood vessel which can cause heart disease.

There are two main types of cholesterol:
1. LDL cholesterol: also called "bad" cholesterol. This type of cholesterol can buildup in arteries. The more LDL there is in the blood, the greater the risk of heart disease.

2. HDL cholesterol: also called "good" cholesterol. This type of cholesterol is taken to the liver, where it is broken down.

A few simple changes can help lower your cholesterol:

Smoking should be stopped to lower cholesterol
You may also need to take a cholesterol lowering drug.
