TBE is a viral infection spread by tick bites. It affects the brain and spinal cord, causing symptoms that range from mild flu-like illness to serious brain swelling. It is found in forested and rural regions of Central, Eastern and Northern Europe, as well as parts of Asia. People who spend time outdoors in these areas are most at risk.
